King performs an admirable feat, immersing us in Lillian’s head while cluing us into her egotism through the mouths, reactions and choices of the supporting characters. Although Lillian’s narcissism intensifies her perceptions of the world, her unreliability begs a profound and relatable question: Can we really trust ourselves?
