As a storyteller, Burke is a master knot maker. The plot twists and loop-the-loops she executes here put me in mind of those how-to-tie-a-scarf instructional videos ... Sharp about the ways in which women — especially a woman like May, who’s been conditioned to see herself as “less than” — undermine themselves. And, given that May is the central character of this twisty thriller, her chronic self-doubt just might turn out to be a fatal flaw.
